Gabbeh (meaning raw, natural, uncut in the Persian language Farsi) represents a rough and primitive carpet with patterns chosen and woven by the Qashqai tribal confederation of the Zagros mountains in Southwestern Iran. Perhaps the most well known and loved designs from Iran, they are made from handspun wool dyed with natural vegetable dyes. The patterns are usually very simple, with large blocks of color and sometimes a few small animal figures and accents. They are extremely durable and feature a plush, thick pile not often found in persian carpets. Though tribal, the designs often invoke a contemporary kind of feel and make an impact in any home.
